Reading comprehension and fluency strategies can be used both in small group and whole class on a regular, systematic basis. These are considered to be Tier 1 interventions. Increasing the intensity and decreasing the group size moves the intervention into a Tier 2.

Page 4: Overview of the CSR Reading Strategies CSR consists of four reading strategies that students apply before, during, and after reading a passage in a peer-mediated learning environment. Research has shown that these strategies—the Preview strategy, the Click and Clunk strategy, the Get the Gist strategy, and the Wrap Up strategy —are effective methods for improving reading.
The 3-2-1 strategy is an active and meaningful method that helps students engage and interact with the text (Zygouris-COE, et. al, 2005). The interactive model is a widely accepted model of reading that is based on cognitive psychology and schema theory. In this model, the reader has an active role in interpreting the text.
Effective textbook reading is a key study skill for student success. Nearly every class makes you read them. 'Makes' is the right word here. 'Requires,' 'forces,' or 'insists' will also work. Few people read textbooks unless they have to. If you read textbooks for fun, shoot me an email. I need to interview you, because I don't think you exist. Reading textbooks is weird. That's right - weird.
Each strategy has a set of speech bubbles with either sentence starters of strategy suggestions. The sentence starters help provide structure for children to express their ideas orally and in their writing. The strategy suggestions help children identify what strategies they could use in their reading.
Content-Specific 3-2-1: You can modify the elements of the 3-2-1 strategy to focus on particular content questions. For example, if the class has just been studying the International Criminal Court, a teacher might have students write down three differences between the ICC and tribunals such as Nuremberg, two similarities between the ICC and these tribunals, and one question they still have.
The 3rd grade reading comprehension activities below are coordinated with the 3rd grade spelling words curriculum on a week-to-week basis, so both can be used together as part of a comprehensive program, or each part can be used separately. The worksheets include third grade appropriate reading passages and related questions. Each worksheet (as well as the spelling words) also includes a cross.
Academic Vocabulary 3-2-1. To increase comprehension and use of academic language, ask students to explore a concept through 3-2-1. First, have them speak with a partner. Provide the structure for 3 minutes of conversation using targeted academic language. Then, ask students to write 2 sentences using the language.
The 3-2-1 strategy is especially successful with struggling readers as it helps them comprehend, summarize, and retain information they've read. The 3-2-1 strategy can be used with informational books, magazine articles, biographies, even websites!
Reading beyond the surface level is a challenge for many students. The three-level guide devised by Herber (1978) and developed further by Morris and Stewart-Dore (1984) helps: students to think through the information in texts.
